Ken Goes to Denver

We are so proud of our grandson, Nathan.  He has worked hard this year on the cross country team.  He is a junior in high school.  He started the season on the Junior Varsity team.  He got better with every cross country meet and qualified for state.  He worked his way onto the varsity team.  The state finals were held in Colorado Springs.  Ken wanted to go and support him and watch him run.  Ken had a lot of responsibilities on Sunday (he is the elders quorum 1st counselor.  He and the RS 1st counselor are over temple and family history and were to do a 5th Sunday lesson on that day with the youth.  They worked hard preparing a Jeopardy game for that day.)  He also had several other meetings scheduled in the afternoon.  So he planned to fly out Friday and come home late on Saturday night after the meet.  But his plans were foiled.

Ken got a hotel in Colorado Springs in the Garden of the Gods area.  He got up on Saturday morning and went for a hike in the beautiful Garden of the Gods.
Big horn sheep roam freely there.

The meet started at 12:30pm.  He met up with Kristen, Jared, and Jake to cheer Nathan on.

Nathan ran really well.

Colorado Springs is about 1 1/2 hours from where Nathan lives in Broomfield,  but look at all of his friends that came to support him.  This is his personal cheering squad!  Two of these people are alternates on the varsity team, but all of the rest came just to support Nathan. (Plus Ken and Kristen, of course)

After the meet, Kristen (who had come to the meet early by herself) and Ken went out to dinner.  Ken was notified that his flight that night was cancelled.  He didn't know why until they walked out of the restaurant into a blizzard.  So much snow fell all at once.  Kristen invited him to come back to their home to spend the night.  He was stuck in Denver.  Literally half of the time that we fly to Denver we have problems getting in or out.  Denver has crazy weather.  Anyway, what usually takes 1 1/2 hours to drive between Colorado Springs and Broomfield, took over four hours.  Ken and Kristen connected and talked on the phone the whole way.  They traveled 3-10 mph.  Ken stayed with the Mackrorys that night.  Though he didn't have proper church clothes, he attended church with them.  He was scheduled to fly out Sunday night.  It was not cancelled but delayed twice.  I picked him up at our airport at 12:30am Monday morning.
So it was kind of a crazy trip, but Ken was so glad he went.  Again we are so proud of this fine grandson of ours.
