July 17 Trondheim, Norway

On July 17th we docked in Trondheim, Norway.

I went out shopping near the pier and met up with Pam and Patty.  My foot was sore, so I didn't feel I could walk to the cathedral, where many of our group were going.

Ken, Tom, Joan, John, and Cindy walked up to the cathedral and did some sightseeing around town.

Seagulls on our deck rail.

There was some kind of festival or fair.  Cindy bought a beautiful necklace at the flea market.

The cold that plagued all of us was bad this day for Ken.  Ken needed to find some cough syrup.  But he forgot to bring his wallet.  So he had to walk back to the ship, get his wallet and walk back to a drug store.  That took up the time we were supposed to go out together.  But that's okay.  One of the things we learned on this trip was to appreciate the USA.  You simply couldn't buy over the counter medications for colds and coughs.  We all suffered because of it.  Luckily, Pam and Roger had brought a bunch and shared.  What a blessing!

Beautiful view from above.

July 16 Alesand, Norway

You have probably noticed by now that I like to start each port post with a picture of us in that location- usually taken on our ship's balcony.  Alesand was beautiful.

We all got off the ship.

Ken and I decided to take a tour on a tram/ train.

They took us up a mountain where the view was gorgeous.

The tour audio was in many languages.  We sat by a couple from Italy.  Their English was limited, but not as limited as our Italian!

Our train/tram in the background.

All during the tour, the audio played a local folk song over and over and over: "Alesand, Alesand"  and then a lot of Norwegian words.  It was cute at first, but then got a little annoying.  We both can still sing the Alesand part.  It's ingrained in our heads.

I don't know who he is.  Somebody famous.

Nor do I know what this is?  Anybody know?

Limited by my sore foot, after the tour I went back to the ship.  Ken walked around town and up the mountain.

In 1904, out on this peninsula, a fire started at about 2:00 in the morning.  It soon spread, burning most of this town.

Each year, they build a huge bonfire out on the island.  Last year, it was declared the biggest bonfire ever by Guiness Book of World Records.  You can see all of the ships/boats gathered to watch the spectacle. I got this picture off of the internet.

A Steep Climb
