A Higher Call: An Incredible True Story of Combat and Chivalry in the War-Torn Skies of World War II by Adam Makos
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I’ll start by saying that my husband loved this book. He loves anything about WWII history- especially air force. Me- not so much. I loved the story that was the reason the book was written: A German pilot could have shot down an American bomber plane over Germany. But when he sees they are badly injured and completely defenseless, he instead escorts them out over the ocean, hoping they will make it back to safety. He says he heard “a higher call” than the rewards the German air force gave for destroying bombers. That is a remarkable story worth telling. Years later, the author connects with both of the pilots and helps bring them together to meet. That also is worth the read. But really most of the book was about each of the men’s experiences in the war. That I didn’t love so much. But that is just because it is not my interest. I don’t know much about airplanes and air force rankings, procedures, awards, and aircraft. So my rating is a 2 for most of the book, and a 4 for the story described above. Average that, and you get my 3 rating.
