Ken in the Hospital with Diverticulitis

Oh my goodness, what a month we have had!  Ken had back surgery on October 24th.  That meant he couldn't lift, bend, twist, push, or pull for four weeks.  We were making our way through that recovery when I got sick with a UTI.  I had to go back to Instacare twice as the first antibiotic did no good.  Then, the very next day, Ken got in horrible pain all day long.  That was Wednesday, November 16th.  Finally at 4 am the next morning, we went to the emergency room.  They took a CAT scan and diagnosed diverticulitis and sent Ken home with an oral antibiotic and strong pain killers.  For two days, Ken was in horrible pain and couldn't eat or really even drink anything. He was throwing up and absolutely miserable. Finally on Saturday we decided we had to go back to the hospital.  They took another CAT scan and this time he was admitted.  The surgeon, Dr. Day, came to meet with us and said he fully expected we would have to do surgery on Sunday morning, but we would see how the IV antibiotics did overnight.   Our kids fasted and prayed for him.  The next morning his indicators showed that he was better (white blood count) and no worse in other areas. Surgery was at least postponed for another day.  Each day the doctor would evaluate.  The strong antibiotics and prayers were doing their job.

Though everyone was kind and helpful, hospital life is not very fun.  The nights were especially difficult.

Ken is an exerciser.  Even when in the hospital, he walked the halls.

He was in the hospital until Wednesday morning, when he was finally released. It was a joyous day.  He was on a liquid diet the whole time he was there- first just clear liquids, then full liquids.

They would update this board every day.  On the last day, Ken wrote out the medication plan himself. He kept track of it all and wanted to make sure not to miss an important dose.

All ready to go home!  He was sent home on the day before Thanksgiving on liquids, but to gradually introduce solid foods.  It made for an unusual Thanksgiving Day.

Now, the next few days are critical.  He had powerful IV antibiotics in the hospital, then has been on oral antibiotics since.   Those are gone now, so we are watching closely how he responds being off the antibiotics.  If his condition worsens, it means the infection is not gone and he will have to have surgery.  We are hoping and praying that won't happen.

Wow, what hard things you have been through! I feel so badly that we didn't know. I am so sorry that you have both had to go through such misery and I hope you continue to repair. You have surely been in our prayers ever since we have known. We love you both so much.
