July 19 Honningsvag, Norway

Honningsvag was our northern-most port.  Before we left, I put Ken on the wait list for a birding safari.  Late the night before, he got a notice that he could go.  He had a wonderful time.

The information about the tour warned to dress warm in layers.  He did and it was perfect.  He was comfortable all day.

Gjesvaer- the little village from which the tour left.

Small island on which birds nested.

Puffins and Guillemots

Nesting colony of Northern Gannetts

Puffins

He saw three new life listers on this tour: white-tailed eagle, arctic tern, and arctic skua.  He also saw many birds he had seen before including hundreds of puffins.
Nesting island

Island with Kittiwakes on it.

Racks of drying fish (arctic cod)

The boat that took them out to see the birds.

They had a short amount of free time in a museum and gift shop at the pier.

They saw a large herd of reindeer.

Arctic tundra landscape

Lake from which Honningsvag gets it's drinking water.

Example of early inhabitants home.

Name of the place where these early native homes were displayed.

They actually went by North Cape on the tour, so he got a sneak peek.  We sailed by it later that evening.

It was a marvelous tour.
Three islands with the bird rookeries.

I went into town and shopped and did Internet near the port.  It was cold!

I thought these avalanche fences were interesting.

The next post will show North Cape which we sailed by later that evening.
