My brother-in-law, Jim, is an historian extraordinaire
and also a great writer. He is Ken’s
oldest brother (of eight.) Unbeknownst
to me, he kept detailed records of the Hinton family: Parents, Lavar and Leora
and their eight children, and of our annual family reunions. I loved reading about and reminiscing of
those wonderful reunions and the activities, foods, and fun we had
together. The Hinton reunions were planned
to be fun, educational (we always had workshops on various subjects,) spiritual
(testimony meetings, church services, journal sharing, etc. were often
included,) and unifying. Though the
Lavar Hinton reunions have been discontinued, the traditions live on as we each
now hold reunions with our own families, patterning them after those amazing
Lavar Hinton reunions. The cousins are
grown and spread across the nation, well, the world. But they seek each other out. They often hold mini regional reunions and
get together with those living close to them frequently. I think this is a direct result of those
annual reunions. This book has given me
a broader perspective on and greater appreciation for the importance of extended
family. I am most grateful to Jim. May he be blessed for this great effort.
This isn't a great picture of a picture, but it is the whole gang, with individual family shots along the top and bottom. It is one of our treasures. |
