Hike to Canaan Mountain/ Water Canyon

On Saturday, October 27th, Ken and friends Kurtis Larson and Dave McKelleb went on a day hike out near where the polygamists live.  I will let him tell you about it.
Kurtis and Dave kindly invited me to join them in this little adventure. We hiked Water Canyon in the Canaan Mountain Wilderness Area. It was only the second time I have done that hike, the first time being about 20-25 years ago. It is still relatively undiscovered and very beautiful. We caught it at about the peak of the Fall foliage for this year.
We arrived just as the sun began to highlight the upper canyon walls to the west.

Although it was still a little dark to get a great picture with my iPhone, I loved the beauty of  this reflective scene as we arrived.

Can you tell I felt it was a little cold at the start? (What a wimp I am!!)

The further up the canyon we went, the prettier the Fall foliage became.

A little-known arch high on the east canyon wall.

We eventually climbed into the slot canyon behind Dave and Kurtis in this photo.

This section of the slot canyon, where there was some flowing water, was enchanting.

Have you seen enough of the Fall foliage yet? (Nope!) Unfortunately, our cameras could not capture the full beauty of the autumn leaves.

Once we "topped out", the beautiful vistas just multiplied. 360 degrees of gorgeous views.

Beginning the descent.

In places, the trail got a little "sketchy", defined as difficult to traverse or difficult to locate. That being said, it was a wonderful day spent with two precious friends in some of God's indescribably beautiful creations!

My family and some scouts did this hike the week after I was called as scoutmaster in 1992. There is a funny story associated with it so I will share it briefly.

We left Las Vegas after school Thursday of spring break in March with 15 kids in the big van and Joyce in the other car with all the gear. We arrived in Colorado City after dark, so we unloaded back packs and began our two night three day adventure.

We had to climb a fence, and it was pretty dark, so as soon as we got to the cedar trees, we made camp. The scouts roasted hotdogs, and we fed our little kids and their friends who came along out of a can. The night was cold, but in the morning we were anxious to get started. We loaded up our sleeping bags, and were ready to start up the trail, but I was unsure where the trail head started.

I climbed up to a vantage point and I realized we were one drainage to the west of Short Creek. We put on our packs and started back to the car. We noticed a few boys riding bikes, then about 15 girl children, being watched by 2 moms. They were all wearing Sunday dresses, and running and playing.

As we got back to the fence, we realized that we had spent the night in the Hilldale Utah city park.

The rest of the trip was great too. We hiked up Telegraph and down Water canyon. I would like to do it again someday, so if you go let me know.
