The Prince Family Visits

The week of October 23rd was the Prince family's fall break from school.  They stayed with us on Tuesday night on their way down to San Diego, California for their vacation.  Then they came back through on Sunday.  We tended Fred, their dog, while they were gone.

It was so nice to go through the St. George temple open house with them on Wednesday morning before they left for California.  We especially loved sitting in the Celestial room and talking with our grandkids.

An eternal family

Michelle and Brian were married in this beautiful temple.

The MarbleWorks toy is always the first one they go for downstairs.

On their way.

Ken went to Denver on Friday, so Fred and I hung out together.  He's a good dog and was good company for me.

Because Ken got stuck in Denver (watch for next post,) he wasn't here when they came back on Sunday.  I made a meatloaf dinner for them before they headed back home:  Meatloaf, baked potatoes, Parmesan Green Beans, Fluffy Orange Salad, Congo Bars (soon to post on Hungryhintons.)

Fred was so excited to see his family.  I didn't quite catch the picture, but when Brian picked him up, he put his neck over Brian's shoulder, giving him a hug.  It was so sweet.  They all love their dog.

Kenny's birthday was going to be soon, so he opened the gift from us before they took off.

They left late, making for a late arrival home.  It was so nice to spend a little time with these people that we love so much.

Authentically, Izzy

Authentically Izzy (Skymar #1)Authentically Izzy by Pepper D. Basham
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A romance develops all through e-mails and video chats. There is also a lot of communication between cousins, weaving seamlessly together a delightful story. Almost the entire book is done in epistles, but that doesn’t weigh it down at all. You hardly notice. What a talented author to be able to do that. I will be reading the next of this series. It was a fun, relaxing read- or listen. I listened to the audio version.

Lessons in Chemistry

Lessons in ChemistryLessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

As I look through the reviews of this book, it seems you either love it or you hate it. Proving my theory wrong, I find myself kind of in the middle. I sincerely hope that women weren’t treated this way in the early 1960s. It’s disgusting. Elizabeth is fighting a battle she just can’t win. Men rule her world. The pendulum has swung maybe a bit too far the other way now, but I am so glad that women’s minds and contributions are honored and appreciated now. I see that just released is a TV series based on this book on Apple TV. I can see why it was chosen: the characters are interesting, the story engaging, and the premise is really creative. I enjoyed reading this book. Warning: There is a rape scene. Skip it. You will be able to smell it coming. There is some language. Hard to skip that.

Mom, I'm So Impressed!

Michelle doesn't usually buy sugary cereal, but she found Cap'n Crunch on sale at Sam's Club.  When William got home from school and saw it in the pantry, he exclaimed,"Mom, I'm so impressed that buyed that cereal!"

He was so happy and sat right down to a bowl of it.

The Next Three Days

If you are looking for a really good, exciting, edge of your seat movie- this is it.   You will think about it for days afterward.  It was genius!  We watched it on Netflix.

Manifest

We recently watched this intense science fiction series on Netflix.  It sure kept us on the edge of our seats.  We liked that it was mostly clean with a strong emphasis on family.  But it gets a little dark sometimes.  Overall, we liked it.

Love at First Sight

A rom-com, yes.  But it was different than most rom coms.   We enjoyed it.  The acting was good.  It was well done.

Count It All Joy

In studying for the next Gospel Doctrine lesson I teach in November, this phrase in James 1:2 just jumped out at me:

"My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;"

The Joseph Smith translation changes it to "when ye fall into many afflictions."

I looked at other bible translations.  In the Christian Standard Bible it reads:

" Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials."

What?  I'm supposed to count it joy to have trials?  I have thought a lot about this.  I look forward to the discussion on it in our gospel doctrine class.  How can our trials bring us joy?  What do you think?

A speaker in general conference, Elder Jaggi, said that his family had t-shirts with "Count it all joy" printed on them, representing their family's mantra.  What a great reminder when difficult times come.

A mantra from the scriptures to consider:  Count it all joy!

First Grade

I am writing a book of stories from my life.  It is called "Grandma's Stories."  Following is one of the stories from that book.

First Grade

First grade was kind of a traumatic year for me.  I will tell you two stories that happened to me that year.

Cynthia

Behind Lincoln elementary school, where I attended first grade, was a little, white building.  It was a school room that housed the special needs children.  Among those children was a little girl that had Down syndrome.  Her name was Cynthia and she loved to hug children.  The older children liked to scare the younger children.  They told us that Cynthia would chase us, catch us, then hug the breath out of us.  I was so frightened of Cynthia.  I did not want to have my breath hugged out of me.  So, when I saw Cynthia on the playground, I would scream and run from her.

I now realize that it was just a lack of education.  The teachers should have taught us about special needs children, but I believed what the older children told me.  It makes me so sad that I treated Cynthia that way.  I wish I could see her now and give her a big hug!

Chased by an Old Man

This story still makes me scared to think about.  I hesitate to share it, but it is part of my history, so I will.

My parents went out of town together at least once a year.  My dad attended physician heart association meetings and my mom would go with him.  They would always hire a woman to stay with us.  I hated it.  I never liked the women they hired.  It was a miserable time for me.

When I was in first grade, they went away and hired an older woman to stay with us.  Each day I walked home from school at lunchtime to eat, then walked the three blocks or so back to Lincoln elementary.

One day, I was just about a block from my home, when an old man came out of his house across the street and came running toward me.  His house was up on a hill and he was coming quickly down the steps, and across the street, right for me.  I screamed and started running.  On my side of the street was a horse pasture across the street from his house. That pasture seemed so big that day.  I ran and ran.  Next was Blacker’s house, then ours.  I ran into my house, only to be greeted by the babysitter lady that I didn’t trust or like.  This is many years ago, but I remember each detail so well.  I sat on the fireplace hearth in the family room and panted.  I was so traumatized.  The lady kept encouraging me to come and eat.  I just kept shaking my head “no.”  I couldn’t eat.  I was so upset and so scared.  She was frustrated with me.  After a long time, she said I had to go back to school.  I was just a little girl.  I knew there was a way to the school that didn’t involve going by the old man’s house.  I could turn right out of my house instead of left, then go around the block.  But I was so little and doing that seemed too overwhelming.  I didn’t know what to do.  I knew I couldn’t go back by his house.  So, when she made me leave, I did go right, but instead of going around the block, I continued down our road and went to play with a little boy I often played with that lived about a half block down our Idaho street.  After a while, they had to go somewhere, so I left.  I continued down that road until I came to a big field- about a block from my house.  I went into the middle of the field and just sat there for what seemed like a very long time.  I was so scared and didn’t know what to do.

On the other side of the field lived the Christensens in our ward.  Linda Christensen was a year younger than me, and I often played with her.  So, I went to the Christensen’s house and asked to play with Linda.  Mrs. Christensen- Marie- quizzed me about why I wasn’t in school.  I lied and told her it was a vacation day.  While Linda and I played, she got suspicious and called my babysitter.  The babysitter evidently told her that I was supposed to be in school.  Marie volunteered to drive me to school, which she did.  Evidently my teacher had been informed of my shenanigans.  When I walked in the classroom- and I remember this so well- she asked me where I had been.  I started to tell a lie.  She, with the whole class watching and listening, called me a liar and told me I was very bad.  I went to my seat, trembling and humiliated.

I felt safer walking home from school because there were many children walking.  When I got home, the mean babysitter lady yelled at me.  She said I had to stay in my room until I was willing to tell why I did what I did.  That was a long afternoon in my room all by myself.  I cried and cried.

Later, when my sister Pam got home, she came in and talked to me.  She was so gentle and kind.  I cried and cried and then finally told her the whole story.  She hugged me and promised to help me.

She told the story to the mean babysitter lady and they came up with a plan.  They may have talked with my parents, too.  I’m not sure.  But Pam took me to the old man’s house.  I remember it so very well.  I was so scared.  I was trembling. She and I and the man and his wife sat in their living room.  Pam confronted him with what had happened.  I remember his words so clearly, “I would never hurt a little girl.”  Whatever.  I didn’t believe him then and I don’t believe him now.  I KNOW his intent was to hurt me.

After that, the mean babysitter lady came to the school each day to walk me home.  That was part of the master plan.  I hated it.  I was so embarrassed she was there.  I would run ahead of her.  That made her mad and she would get after me.  It was a long two weeks.

I never had any more problem with the old man.  I think confronting him directly was wise.  I hope he didn’t hurt any other children.  I walked by his house many, many times after that as that house was on the way to Lincoln, then Washington elementary.  I also had friends I played with frequently that lived in the block behind his house.  As the years went by, I didn’t feel afraid going by that house any more.

As I look back on this now, I feel that I was blessed and protected.  I was able to run fast enough to get away and I think the spirit must have warned me of the danger I was in.  I am grateful for that protection.  Partly because of this incident, I pray every day for protection for my grandchildren.

Those are my traumatic first grade stories.

The Mostly Female Army of Helaman (MFAoH)

Our granddaughter, Gabbi is a force.  She is a natural leader.  She has organized a group of kids- mostly female- to go to the temple together each Friday morning to do Baptisms and Confirmations.  They call themselves The Mostly Female Army of Helaman (MFAoH)  They have a later start at their school on Fridays, so they are using that time to serve.  Gabbi loves to do family history work, and she finds a lot of names of ancestors to do the work for.  She and Jaron are keeping me busy, too, trying to find names.  I love this precious army!  Michelle says she does it entirely on her own.  She has set up a text group.  She sends out a reminder and asks whose mom can drive.  One Friday, all of the middle and high schools were off school.  It was not the best day to go because the teenagers flooded the temple.  Gabbi and her friends had to wait three hours to do three names each!  But what better place is there to hang out?

I asked to her to take a picture of the army.  She says the numbers vary each week from 3- 12.  This week there were four who came.

What Matters Most is What Lasts the Longest

When Elder Ballard spoke in general conference he quoted this mantra as being one of his wife's mantras.  I love it.  It is so true.

Sister Barbara Ballard

I love the perspective this mantra gives.  We need to focus our time and energy on what will last.  That's what matters.

Elder Ballard said that his children put several of his wife's and his mantras on the tombstone.  It looks like there are several excellent mantras on here.  What a great idea for a tombstone!  I'm going to start writing mine.

Update on Peru Humanitarian Project

We were so thrilled to get recent pictures of the Peru Humanitarian project Ken participated in.  The locals have worked hard to complete the part that the group worked on.  Here you can see the third pond is entirely bricked, cemented and functional.  The large hole the group dug also is bricked and cemented.  It is a settling pond for the water that will go in the fish runs.  I was interested in the bamboo sticks across pond number one.  Ken says they are to keep birds and other predators from getting to the fish.  It is hard to describe how satisfying it is to see these pictures.  The group definitely gave them the boost, but the local people continued the work after they left.

You can see the fish in this picture.
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."  That old proverb seems to apply here.

Lovely Evening with our Friend Kurtis

Kurtis has been our dear friend for many years.  We met he and his wife, Diana, the first week we moved into our home in 1985 and have been friends since then.  Diana passed away a few years ago and Kurtis now cares for his handicapped sister in his home.  He sold his florist business and retired last year and has since been doing lots of traveling.  He recently returned from Japan and we wanted to hear all about it, so invited he and his sister over for a full report.

He brought us sushi candy and beautiful flowers.

We served a berry cobbler.

What a delightful evening it was with a special friend!

Ring of Fire

Did you get to see the eclipse?  We didn't.  I was unprepared and didn't have special safe glasses to view it.  But we definitely saw it get darker in our house and the temperature dropped five degrees.  I stole pictures from the many posted online.

Our friend posted this one of shadows underneath his tree in his backyard.  I thought it was really cool.

Clark and Nan Come to Visit

Clark, Ken's brother, and his wife Nan came to town to visit the St. George temple open house, Zion National Park, and local family historical sites of interest.  Their daughter and son-in-law and their family also came, and they spent most of their time with them.  It was so nice to visit with them in the evenings and over breakfast on the three mornings.

They came to our ward with us.  This is the only picture I got.  We asked Clark's granddaughter if she thought they looked alike.  She didn't think so, but I do!
It was nice to have some one -on -one time with Clark and Nan!

Fire in the Hole!

Several weeks ago, I put a loaf of bread in our oven to bake.  Ken and I went in the bedroom to fold clothes.  Soon we smelled a burning smell and ran in the kitchen to find smoke pouring from the oven and soon the smoke alarm was screaming. The bread was burned on the outside and raw in the middle.  Obviously, the oven malfunctioned. Ken found in the owner's manual how to reset it.  It worked for a while, but a few weeks later, I was baking a cake and saw strange lights inside the oven.  I opened it so see flames coming out of the vents in the oven.  I quickly turned it off.

We had a repairman come .  He said the computer controller board was out, causing a short.  He later called, quoting over $800 to get the parts to fix it.  He suggested we buy a new one.  We immediately went out range and oven shopping.  We chose one at Lowe's, purchased it, and it was delivered a few days later.  We wanted another white one, but that is not available any longer.

It is beautiful and seems to be functioning well.

Dear Friends From Japan Come to Visit

We have been looking forward to our dear friends from Japan coming to visit for months.  Imi and her daughter, Rizumi have been planning this trip for a very long time.  Imi retired from her job in September and moved up to Hakodate, Japan to live with her mother there.  She and Rizumi have been traveling throughout Japan and Okinawa for several weeks and to America to spend the month of October in Utah.  Imi's other daughter, Remi lives with her family in Utah.  They came here to spend a few days.  We had a wonderful time with them.

We attended the St. George temple open house with them.  They were so interested and loved seeing it.  We went at a good time when few others were there, making it possible to spend much time inside.

Remi and her daughter

They then came to our home for the afternoon and for dinner in the evening.

Rizumi is an excellent photographer and took a lot of pictures of Walker and Remi's cute daughter.  She's a little doll.

We had such a delightful time visiting.  How we love these dear people.

It is impossible to describe the joy this day brought. We love these people so very much.  Though it had been awhile since we had seen them, and there still is a language barrier, we just picked up where we left off.  There was so much love and joy in the room.  I feel like Imi is my sister and that her family is our family.  May God bless these precious souls!
Until we meet again, dear friends!

Marathoners From Japan

A delegation of winners of the marathon in a town in Japan- Iwigawa, came to St. George to run in the St. George Marathon.  Our friends, the Tophams, hosted the women's winner and her mother in their home.  They asked Ken to come over the first night and translate to help them get settled in their home.

A picture of the group meeting the mayor.  It was in the St. George news.

Ken was in their home for a couple of hours helping them get settled.  It was fun for him to use his Japanese and to meet these fine people.  I think he was of great service to them.

The marathon was Saturday. Fumie (middle) did well.  She has run many, many marathons. Sunday evening, the Tophams invited us over for dessert and visiting to say goodbye to their honored guests.

Think Celestial

I have been asked by our Relief Society presidency to prepare a short article for each month's Relief Society newsletter on spiritual preparedness.   I thought I might just as well publish those articles here as well. They publish on the first day of the month.  This is November's article.

In October conference, our prophet reminded us to think Celestial.

“I invite you to adopt the practice of “thinking celestial.”

I encourage you to begin with the end in mind.

When you are confronted with a dilemma, think celestial!

When tested by temptation, think celestial!”

Preparing spiritually is all about thinking celestial.
