Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm
Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm by Kate Douglas Wiggin
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
When I saw this book on Scribd, it elicited a strong, warm, emotional response. Though I couldn’t remember a thing about the story, I remembered loving it as a child. I had to listen to it. It was fun to revisit this coming-of-age story written in 1901. Rebecca is a literary hero for young girls as she faces and solves problems and continually convinces herself to make good choices. It is also a great study in what life was like for a young girl way back then. This is a classic.

What are the Magic Words?
At our reunion, I taught a lesson on manners and etiquette. Wanting to involve even the youngest children, I asked four-year-old Lisi, "What are the magic words?" Without hesitation, she answered, "Jesus Christ died for me."
It wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but really was the better answer. Those truly are the magic words, aren't they?

Sprinkler Problems
Sixty-nine years old is too old for ditch digging. But he did it. Our back sprinkler had a problem, so Ken called our new friend who does sprinkler repair. The wire that goes from the inside control box out to the sprinkler had gone bad. Trent said he would dig the ditch and bury the wire, but it would be expensive. Those are motivational words for Ken, so he said he would do it himself. So the next morning he started digging the 65 foot trench. It was hard work as there were many tree roots that had to be chopped along the way. It took him three hours to complete the project. He then called Trent back to have him come set it up. Ken was exhausted and so sore. It was on a Tuesday and Tuesday evening at 5:00 was Elders quorum presidency meeting with many visits afterward. Most of those visits were to people who aren't members of our church, or who don't actively participate, so they were doorstep visits. After such a hard day, it was hard to stand that long. He got home about 9:00 very tired, but after a spirit-filled evening of ministering. He was sore for a few days, but we are glad to have that repair behind us.
These pictures don't show how much work this was. |

THINK
In a recent Relief Society lesson, the teacher suggested this powerful mantra. Before you speak, THINK.

Marilla of Green Gables
Marilla of Green Gables by Sarah McCoy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Long a fan of the Anne of Green Gables series, I was delighted to read this prequel to the series- the story of Marilla.
Knowing the ending of Marilla’s life made reading this story of her life quite sad, as I knew she would not get her dreams fulfilled. But, still, it was a well-written and enjoyable novel. It is a story of a hard-working, devoted, strong-willed woman. I love the characters, the setting, and the history it teaches. I have to say, though, that I felt that some of the characters were different than they are in the Anne series. For instance, Rachel is a much stronger character there than in this story. Matthew is much quieter and more lovable in the series. Even Marilla is much bossier and more outspoken in the series. If you are a fan of Anne, though, you will want to read this one!

This is a cute movie on Amazon Prime. We have found so many clean movies lately on Prime. This one, set in Ireland, has beautiful scenery. Though predictable, it is a pleasant watch.

Staying with the Prince Boys While Their Parents Trek
We went to South Jordan June 20th-24th to stay with the Prince boys while their parents and Gabbi went on their stake trek. Michelle and Brian were a Ma and Pa to a "family" of youth.
We often find surprises on the guest bed when we get there. |
Michelle made delicious Cafe Rio burritos for dinner that night. |
Gabbi was the tortilla cook. |
Gabbi loves to take my phone and change stuff. I found this selfie of her had become my screen saver. She is so cute. |
Michelle makes a chart like this every night to help her family function. |
Ma and Pa are ready to trek! |
And so is Gabbi. |
One of Kenny's chores was to weed the garden. Grandpa helped him. |
On Thursday night, we took the kids to Noodles and Co. for dinner. They loved it. |
Afterward, we went to Nielsen's Frozen Custard for cones, |
Then to play at the park. |
The first thing out of William's mouth when his mom got home was, "We got to go to three parks!" That's the life when you're five. |
A selfie taken at the piano concert. |
All three boys played the piano for us. We had such a nice concert. |
William took me downstairs to put on a show for me. It was quite entertaining. I'm sure it all made sense in his mind. |
Kenny got into the act, too. |
Grandpa finishing up the weeding. |
On the first day, Grandpa took the kids to the Bingham Canyon Mine. |
