A Special Gift From Japan

We got notice while we were on our cruise that we had a package awaiting us that came from Japan.
When we got home, we got the package and opened it to find beautiful handknit scarves.  A student from one of our English classes knitted these for us and sent them.  They are beautiful.
They came from Echiko Enemoto, a dear friend.  She and her daughter, Mei came to our English class.  Mei was preparing to go to Canada to attend college and wanted help learning English.  As you can see, Echiko also speaks and writes very good English.

These are pictures of Mei and Echiko taken one day near their home.  They lived about an hour from Tsuruoka, so it was quite a commitment to attend class.  One day they had us come  up to their beautiful town near the sea for a tour and lunch at a delicious sushi restaurant.  We had a delightful afternoon with them.

Echiko and Me

A close-up of the beautiful stitches.  It felt like I had seen it before.  I remembered that my mom knit a sweater from very similar yarn and with a similar stitch.

Echiko has had a rough year.  She started losing her eyesight in one eye.  You may remember a big earthquake earlier this year in Japan.  It caused a lot of damage at her home.  And her mother died earlier this year.  I have been able to stay in contact with her because her English is so good.  She is one of those people that I felt like I knew her already when I met her.  It was a very strong feeling.

We are deeply grateful for these special gifts for a dear friend in Japan.
