Hinton Sibling Reunion 2023

The Hinton siblings gathered for our annual reunion on August 17th, this year in Logan, Utah.  We usually hold this reunion sometime in the fall, but because Lorene and Rick and Sherrie were soon  to depart on missions, we held it in August.  (Lorene is now in Salt Lake City serving in the church headquarters mission and Rick and Sherrie are going to the Washington DC North mission in November.)
We first gathered in the Logan temple at 2:00pm.  This is a picture of some of us as we came out:  Ken and Kay, Clark and Nan, Don and Ada, and Rick and Sherrie.

Jim was presented with a book for his 80th birthday when we got to the airbnb that many stayed in.  Three of us stayed with family members:  Mark and Kathy stayed with Kurtis and Paige, Lorene stayed with Nephi and Aubrey, and we stayed with Shonna and Blake.

We had a delicious hamburger dinner.

We were traveling to Chesterfield, Idaho the next day.  Chesterfield is a ghost town now, but it was where some of Ken's ancestors on his mother's side lived.  Dave and Gerri, who were in charge of the reunion this year, had three people report on ancestors that we would be hearing about the next day.  Ken is reporting on Judson Adonirum Tolman., Sr.  It was so interesting.  He was one of the founders of Chesterfield and a bishop there.  He was a fine man who did a lot of good.  He was Ken's mother's grandfather.

Jim is unofficially the secretary of the family, taking detailed notes of the activities that he later shares with us.  He would be a great blogger!

Rick did a wonderful presentation on Judson Adonirum Tolman, Jr.
He was Ken's mother's father.  He died on Ken's parents wedding day.
Lorene told a fascinating story about ancestors Ada Winchell Clements and Albert Clements.  Ada was present when Brigham Young was speaking after Joseph's death and he transformed, looking and sounding like Joseph Smith.  Because of that, she KNEW Brigham was to be the next prophet.  Her husband disagreed with her and thought Sidney Rigdon should be ordained the prophet.  They could not resolve their differences.  She took her children and came west, following Brigham, and he remained there.  Several years later, her now grown son, unbeknownst to her, went back east and found his father and convinced him to come west and reunite with his mother.  He did.  They courted for a while and then she consented to remarry him.

Friday, we went on our field trip.  We started at the Preston, Idaho cemetery where many of Ken's ancestors are buried.

After checking in at the general store in Chesterfield, we went up to the gazebo to eat our picnic lunch.  We were scheduled for a 1:00pm tour of the town.

Ken and Don often go off in a corner to discuss birds.

After a restroom stop, we went to the chapel.  Our knowledgeable guide taught us a lot.

These old signs were on the back wall of the chapel.

Several of us got to play the old pump organ.

Old Sacrament trays.

An old wood stove

Our transportation was this very comfortable wagon.  It was really fun.  Our driver and guide are volunteers.  They have ancestors that lived here, too, and they keep the memories alive, offering tours with much information, as a service each summer.

We loved going through the old houses and imagining their lifestyle.

Friday night's activity was a game that we played on our phones presented by Don on the Kahoot app.
On Saturday evening, after the A. Lavar Hinton reunion (which I will post about next) and dinner, Clark shared some "Surprise Photos."  He recently went through a lot of old negatives and cleaned them.  They had never- before -seen family photos on them.  He has since shared them with us online.

Mark and Kathy, Clark and Nan, Ken and Kay, Lorene, Rick and Sherrie, Don and Ada, David and Gerri, and Jim and Leslie.

Mark, Clark, Ken, Lorene, Rick, Don, David, and Jim.  Jim is the oldest at 80, Mark and Clark are the youngest at 67.

Thank you David and Gerri for planning a wonderful reunion.
