Empire Falls by Richard Russo
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Twenty years ago, Richard Russo won the Pulitzer Prize for this novel. It is complex, character-driven, and very well written. Set-in small-town Maine, it certainly captures the life of Miles and his associates. I felt there were a high ratio of negative characters to Miles positive goodness. I really liked him. I especially liked his relationship with his teenage daughter and his love for her. He would do anything in the world for her . . .and did. I see why it won the prize as it masterfully depicts blue-collar, small town American life.
